What makes a lipless crankbait better than a soft plastic swimbait?
The swimbait is way more realistic so I’m wondering why most people con

One is not necessarily better than the other. There are certain applications where each one shines. Some days ive wrecked on a soft swimbait and other days ive wrecked em on a trap. Just all a matter of what the fish are wanting that day.

Sometimes it’s not about realism, sometimes it’s about catching attention.

Cranks make more sound, often have more erratic movement, and can be beneficial in circumstances where water clarity isn’t great, fish aren’t as aggressive due to time of year, water temp etc
That’s my personal interpretation of the distinction, generally speaking I reckon you’ll do pretty well with either if retrieved in similar ways

The lipless puts off a shit ton of vibration, and they sink like a rock. A Swimbait is a more subtle vibration and can come in a variety of weights. Lipless are better for fishing vertical, compared to swimbaits. Swimbaits are more versatile because they bc an be rigged many different ways, including weedless.

swimbaits are soft and so are destroyed more easily too

Personally I love the feel of a crankbait, I can tell what speed it’s moving in current, i can feel bumps and snags and bites more clearly. Also easier for me to tell when it’s tangled or not swimming properly.
That said, I am not a great swim bait fisherman in general and hoping to improve in the future.

It depends on how the fish are feeding, if they are ambushing stuff, the lipless reeled pretty quickly will cause a reaction strike where they just attack without thinking.
If the fish are actively moving around and feeding, the thump of the paddle tail in the swimbait and the more realistic look could perform way better.
No bait is strictly better than another, it mostly depends on how the fish are moving and what they are feeding on.

Crank gives a better horizontal presentation when vertical jigging. It’s harder to find jig heads that give the same horizontal look

Ive never had any luck with these types of lures, but soft baits slam them for me

They are more durable.

Lipless crankbaits generate pure reaction bites. They are fished fast and erratic which doesn’t give the fish time to see the lure very well. For the fish It’s either strike or miss a potential meal. It is really good in colder water where fish are not really chasing or actively feeding
Swim baits are fished slower and usually in clearer water where realism is a priority and it’s it usually better in a situation where the fish are active and willing to chase down a meal.
