St Croix Retired Rods

St Croix is having a sale on what they call “retired rods” right now. The prices seem great, and I’m really considering buying one. However I’m not sure what they mean by retired. Does anyone have experience with this? Should I be worried about getting a used or possibly defective rod if I buy one? Thanks!
