I know people are against taking home native trout, the population in the local river is doing just fine and my nephew wanted to eat it, so we ate it.
He was set up for steelhead that they had just stocked, I was trying to let him land the biggest fish so I was just secretly throwing for trout. He was fishing this nice deep hole with perfect overhead coverage using his bobber dogging setup, and I elected to throw a small chunk of shrimp on a size 8 hook and a single split shot into the riffles about 20 yards ahead of that pool and hooked this guy on the first cast, after about 3 seconds of drifting.
Came out to 19" long, but my favorite is the color. I've caught a few steelhead but I dream of one with this red of a gill plate and side stripe, so this is far and away my favorite, and coolest fish I've ever caught, and I've fished coast to coast. The meat was so orange and fatty you could have sworn that fish and game made a whoopsie with their steelhead stocking lmao
