Sorry in advance if this is common knowledge as I know nothing about fly fishing or what you need to do it – I’m looking to gift the Echo Carbon XL (or similar in the price range, open to recommendations) along with the rod itself, what else do I need to buy to make this a useable gift? Again, I know nothing. I’m not necessarily looking for added extras but necessary purchases to go along with the rod. Thank you.

  1. Do they have a reel that would work with this rod? Do they have other gear? I’m guessing this is not their first rod. Any other info would help a lot

  2. Do they already fly fish? Or you want to be able to get them fly fishing with this gift?

This is a fantastic 3 weight rod. I own it myself and recently gifted my dad one as well. I have the orvis Battenkill click and pawl reel with mine. I would highly recommend it, also make sure to get some fly line with it.

If they haven’t fly fished before and if you don’t have a background in fly fishing, this isn’t really a good idea because neither you nor they know what type of rod they’ll need.

If you think they’re interested in fly fishing, get them a gift card to a fly shop. That way they can educate themselves and then use it to get what they need.

    That’s my two cents.

I believe the echo lift used to be called the echo base. I mention this because I have owned the base and carbon. The difference in price did not reflect the quality difference and I remember preferring the base. Now called the lift, it’s $175 for a 5wt. I’m bringing this up because you need a reel to go with it, which can range from $60-$200 or so depending on what you choose. Just don’t get a plastic reel or a cast aluminum reel. You want a machined aluminum reel in my opinion. You will also need a line and a tapered leader, along with a couple flies to have a fishable bundle.

Get them an echo lift combo kit. It will be a great rod and comes with a reel and decent line. They’ll need flies, leaders, etc. but maybe get them a gift card or something so they can get the flies they want.

  7. That is only a rod and you’d need a reel, backing and fly line to get to a usable gift out of the box. You would want to get them a fly outfit. Echo makes a rod outfit called the traverse that comes with a good rod, reel and line for about that same price. That or an Orvis Clearwater outfit would be a great choice (sign up for email list and get 15% off, which gets it down into a similar price range).

I’d go to the maxxon website

You can get a decent deal for the trail hawk rod it’s only 75. Bucks and comes with rod, reel, and pouch

  9. Hey OP, I have the 9’ 5wt echo XL. Was my first rod and is solid. I like the Echo stuff. I ended up buying the 10’ 3 wt. when I got into euro stuff. Just solid rods. Can’t go wrong at that price point.

  10. Not sure what your looking for but Echo rods are great for the price point and probably as good as many high end rods

That’s a beauty rod, I have one and have had a ton of fun with it. I paired mine with a Redington ACE reel, floating line, 5X leader and 5X tippet. Lots of small dry flies!
