A lot of newer anglers message me asking how to tell why a fish bites a certain bait and how to adjust when fish follow but don’t commit. So I filmed a full day on the Great Lakes and broke down the exact process I used to figure out what these walleye wanted , this turned into one of my best teaching days I’ve ever recorded.

If you’re a beginner, here are a few things the video walks through in real time:

• How to know when to switch from subtle baits to reaction baits
Early on I lost a near-30-inch walleye on the Eat Seeker glide bait, and that single clue completely changed my approach. I explain how that told me the fish were reacting upward, not downward.

• How to read fish behavior on Live Imaging
Throughout the day I show how to watch for fish that chase on the upstroke, stall on the fall, or slide off to the side — and how each behaviour tells you whether your bait is too slow, too wide, or too soft.

• Why beginners should experiment with fall speed
You can actually see in the video how the Berkley Finisher fell too slow for these fish. They’d follow but wouldn’t commit. That’s why I switched to a fast-falling homemade bucktail jig, which started triggering giants immediately.

• A simple 2-step method for picking multiple fish from a school
Later in the video I show how I first take one fish on a subtle bait (like the Jackall Drift Fry) before switching to a more aggressive lure to grab a second fish from the same pack, super useful tip for anyone frustrated with spooky schools.

• Real examples of big fish reacting to beginner-friendly techniques
The video includes multiple measured giants (29.25”, 30.25”, 30.5”, 28”, 27.25”, etc.) and I explain why each one bit. Beginners can see exactly what “fast and snappy” vs “slow and dragging bottom” actually looks like.

If you’re new to walleye fishing and want a breakdown of bait selection, cadence, fall speed, and how to read fish reactions in clear water, this might help shorten your learning curve a lot.
