Repeatedly finding my betta behind filter system. About 9 times I’ve had to gently pull the filter system out, he swims from behind there and is fine. Is this safe to leave him there? Is this just a favorite spot he continues to go back to?

Tank looks very bright. Probably trying to get away from that
He is probably looking for cover. It also looks like you have some sharp fake plants in there that can damage his fins.
Could you provide a full tank shot?
He’s trying to hide to feel safer. The little bit of tank we can see from the picture it looks like adding live and floating plants would help a ton!
So bettas love hiding spots. Real plants, floaters, a couple of leaf hammocks, a floating log.
Also least flow. You can block the intake with filter floss to help reduce flow
mine also often hides behind the filter and I don’t understand why
Its a secure hiding place near the heater/creating its own warmth. It makes sense that it’s his favorite spot
You Need more hiding places
Get rid of all those fake plants. Con’s don’t look good either. Test your water
Get red root floaters for your tank.
I agree with bright lights. I’m sure you can dim them by covering them. Also, bettas like to chill in weird spots if he keeps doing it
Probably just needs more cover! I’ve seen other people mention the fake plants and recommend real plants, but silk plants are a great alternative if real plants aren’t something you think you could handle! I got a 3 pack for like 17 bucks
My guy hung out near the filter and on top of the heater.
The reasons were not enough near surface resting places and the water flow was slowest there.
I added a betta log, several plants near the top of the tank and baffled the filter output.
now, while he still hangs out near the filter and on top of the heater, he also hangs out in lots of other spaces too.
Live plants and hides should help. My betta likes a floating betta log I got from Amazon. They also have tunnels that can stick to the side. And floaters. Aquarium co-op is good for live plants. Also if the stream of you filter is too harsh it may be the only break from it. As well as the lights.
