I’m going to dive into the world of fly fishing this upcoming spring and my wife is gifting me my first outfit for Christmas. I’ve done some research for fly fishing the creeks/streams around me in SE MN. What I’ve gathered is that maybe a shorter rod would better suit the waters I’ll be fishing (vs., say, the all-around 9’ 5wt recommendations for beginners).

Any thoughts on these 3 rod/reel combos I’ve put together?

  1. That’s about 3x as much as you need (as opposed to want) to spend on a reel. And I much prefer a DT line for lighter rods and smaller waters.

FWIW my classic trout rods all have the tips groove much faster than other rods I possess. Then again I can just buy a spare tip for 25 bucks.

Honestly this is perfect for the driftless. I have a Clearwater and a Classic trout, both are excellent. I think the first two rods outclass the tfo for the price.

You in the Twin cities or down by Rochester? Plenty of fly shops to hit if you want to ask around or buy local. Root River Rod Co is an awesome spot. Let me know if you have any questions fishing the area here in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

As someone who fishes the Driftless, I’d go with the Redington. I haven’t fished a TFO, but I know the Clearwater is a little stiff in my opinion. I feel like the shorter rods really don’t help as much as you might expect. 8’ 6” is fine, but I wouldn’t go shorter. 4-5wt are really the best weights for the Driftless.
