DFO is reviewing the Salmon Allocation Policy (SAP) and wants public input by Jan 9. One major proposal would put commercial fishing ahead of recreational anglers in priority. In practice, that means the public would only be allowed to fish after commercial openings are finished — which means fewer fish left in the system, shorter seasons, and likely reduced retention limits. To me, this makes little sense for conservation or overall economic benefit.

According to data shared by Pacific Angler, rec fishing creates far more value per salmon for local communities. The public delivers $693 GDP per salmon caught vs. the commercial $8 per salmon.

It’s also the lowest-impact sector—selective gear, strong regulations, and minimal pressure on stocks.

If this change goes through, public access to salmon fishing becomes the first thing cut and the last thing restored. That’s bad for conservation, bad for local economies, and bad for anyone who enjoys our outdoor spaces.

What you can do:

Go to the Salmon Forever website, read the SAP summary, and send your feedback to the DFO email listed there. It takes a few minutes and really does matter.

Protect the fish. Protect the access. Speak up before Jan 9.
