Just a heads up, I'm a beginner in planted and tankmates for bettas.

Pictures from 1-7 are the recent, 8th is an old picture.

I've asked other questions in other communities about what to do with the concerns i have about my tank. And here were the answers

  • Why are my frogbit melting? Lack of nitrates and maybe in need of fertilizer.
  • Why are the fins of my betta have holes (8th photo)? Probably from a high bioload since i previously had corys and returned them to the pet store (Already fixed this, my betta has recovered now)

So now my parameters are good, based on the test strips i used (yes, i know that test strips are not specific enough, but I'm a student and the kits are crazy expensive, which i am still saving for), and no i didn't do a test after a water change. I have 1 betta, 2 amano shrimps, 1 nerite snail in a 6.5 gallon tank. And i just recently knew how snails are shit machines and are recommended in a 10 gallon tank. The plant I have are christmas moss, ludiwigia repens, amazon swords, and hydrillas, so I'd say my tank is planted enough.

My main concern rn is how do i maintain a 5-20ppm of nitrates without causing issues to my betta and how do i remove diatoms. As far as I know, diatoms are from left over foods and will eventually disappear on its own, I'm not sure how true is that for people who actually experience it. Any insights would be helpful, thank you!

  1. Since i can’t seem to edit the post, I’ll add this here

I forgot to include how long I’ve had this tank for, I’ve had this for about 2-3 months now.

Also, would using fertilizer harm my betta? How about root tabs? How do i keep my plants healthy while also keeping my betta, shrimps, and snail healthy?

Also, if you happen to know what type of betta i have, that would be helpful since I’m unsure of what he is
