please forgive me i really am a beginner at this stuff😭. so, my boyfriend has been talking about wanting to go fishing with me and some friends. i think he’s been wanting to go saltwater fishing. i know he has gone before but not super often and really doesn’t have any of the equipment. so for christmas, i thought i’d buy him a fishing rod. i don’t wanna ask him too many questions so he doesn’t get suspicious about what i’m buying him, so i was wondering if this is a good rod for him? if not, feel free to leave other recommendations. thank you!

The general consensus i see on reddit about ugly sticks is, they are okay, really durable and you can abuse the shit out of it, but not really worth it for the money. If you paying that much anyway, kist get a Daiwa or Shimano similarly priced. The problem with buying entry level rod is, I keep going:Ā  well if I pay 20 more I can get… well but if I add just 25 more I can get… and so on

  2. Ugly sticks are great rods. I would stay away from the reels due to longevity and reliability. They are great for a couple of fishing sessions but after months of using it will start popping and snapping if your handle doesn’t break. Personally I have an ugly stick with a bass pro series reel. Shimano makes great reels but are more on the expensive side. They have been making gears for bikes for the longest time. They are the number one reel to buy if you have the money but if you are looking for something sub 100 bucks get an ugly stick rod with a nice reel. Don’t buy a combo due to them being cheap on the rod or the real.

Good question! This combo I love and personally use for freshwater fishing but I also caught fish in saltwater but only at a pier and only when i drop my bait literally straight down. As for saltwater fishing, this may be difficult to use because typically saltwater fishing utilizes a larger rod and reel. I personally would suggest an 10 ft UglyStik Bigwater combo for saltwater.

I have both combos. In general, uglystik will be indestructible because they flex/bend a lot, but it is really difficult to detect a bite sometimes.

Rods pretty good reel broke pretty fast for me but I replaced it with a shimamo nexus and have been enjoying myself.

The rods are AMAZING. I use the GX2 for inshore with Penn 3000’s and piscifun 3000’s it’s a tank… the reels from ugly are questionable at best
