Just wanted to share with the one community that will actually get why I’m sad today.

My mystery snail Dave passed away of old age this week. He was the very first member of my tank and the official start of my fishkeeping hobby. He came home with me before any fish, before I fully understood cycling, and somehow he thrived and became an absolute unit.

My heart is kinda heavy today. I was so proud of my mystery tank. He absolutely demolished biofilm in my new tank before anyone else even had a chance. He explored nonstop, was weirdly social, and his favourite thing in the world was launching himself off driftwood like a tiny stunt performer. He really did have a whole personality.

He hadn’t moved yesterday and today I confirmed he passed peacefully. Probably just old age, I had noticed he’d slowed down recently but he lived a very full, VERY well-fed life. I buried him in the backyard and did a decent water change just in case, but the tank is stable and his little protégés Moonshadow + Moonshine are doing fine (they used to hitch hike on him, I’m telling you these snails were actually sentient) lol.

Is anyone else way more attached to their snails than their fish? Because same. Mystery snails have my whole heart.

Also… has anyone had one this big or bigger??? I genuinely love how massive they grow and I’m curious if Dave was unusually large or just thriving under my chaotic but loving care 😂 he was golf ball sized at least. Slightly longer.

Thanks for reading, figured if anyone would understand the loss of a beloved wet pet, it would be all of you 💛🐌

RIP Dave the Driftwood Diver, Pioneer of the Biofilm Realm, First of His Name.
