Hi! I posted yesterday showing off my new one eyed lady (who still needs a name!) she’s got some spots on the eyeless side of her body, about halfway down. Ive asked my fish friends and some are saying potential Koi, and some are saying potential rot, so I thought I’d see if you guys have any input.

Tank photos attached, Aqueon 10g + Aqueon preset tropical heater (78f) with a floating log and magnolia leaves.

She’s got some orientation issues due to the eye, so I’m slowly increasing the water level to full hight, I have a filter I plan to add Monday as that’s when I’m out of classes for winter break, and can fully monitor her adjustment to it. As of now I’m doing a 20% water change daily, and I have a API freshwater test kit arriving on Friday, but I will be out of the house until Monday morning.

My biggest question is just whether or not I should be concerned about the spot on her side, and if so what I should do about it. She ate three bloodworms today, she definitely has some trouble locating them as she bites the water around them a good handful times before making contact, and it’s still learning the corners. I already love this girl so much <3

You seem like you really love your betta and are trying your best to keep her comfortable. I have to ask you how long have you had her and what tank are you planning on keeping her in. Is this going to be her main tank once the water rises and will you be doing a fish in cycle if so? I would suggest to try to keep your water as stable as possible even when you are doing a fish in cycle because if she gets stressed it can make her immune system compromised. As for the little spot on her I can’t tell if that’s infection. Where did you get her and do you know how she lost her eye? Did she have some tank mates that could have injured her body in anyway? Maybe it has to do with her story if you just got her.

Some people might not like this but when I was caring for my sick fish I used chat gpt for everything down to how many breaths a minute my fish was taking and it guided me through some things I didn’t have answers to if that helps you as your fish is going to need a bit more unique care. The biggest advice I can give you is to keep things stable and if you’re going to do a fish in cycle keep track of the Amonia levels in the tank and test your water often. You are awesome for taking her in she looks really cute!
