As many other people here, I was just gifted this cutie.
He was in a small bowl and I just moved him to the biggest food container I had available (0.5 g).

I'm upset that I was gifted this fish, but now that I have it, I want to give it the opportunity to thrive. It does look somewhat unhealthy right now.

The issue is, I don't or can't provide the ideal setup just now… It is a huge investment and the pet stores around me don't have a lot to choose from.

My question is, how can I split the purchases be between now and a month from now? What does it absolutely needs now and what can wait?

We have this food container, food, water conditioner.

I’d say what you need right now is a suitable sized tank from 5-10 gallons, heater and sponge filter(with pump). I would say put any substrate in (like fluval and or sand) before putting him in, but if the price is nonnegotiable you can just wait and slowly cup the substrate in. Plants and other decor can come after. I’d also recommend getting some tannins in there, should help him feel better!

Another thing sometimes people sell tanks for real cheap on Facebook market place if that’s anywhere you want to check!

Good for you for being willing to give him a better life even though he’s been thrust onto you! Here’s to hoping everything goes well :D!!

Heater and water filtration, one with gentle water flow, especially with his long fins.

Maybe someone can correct me on this but I might go for the heater first even before the water filter. You might be able to do more frequent water changes to remove waste, but I don’t think you can really get around the fish being too cold.

He’s a beautiful fish. I hope he’s able to thrive with you as a thoughtful owner.
