my female beta will flare if i put the tip of my finger in the water, if im ever putting my hand in to grab something or fix plants she seems to be okay and she’s okay with tweezers too, but it seems she flares her gills out at me when i just use the tip of my finger to say hi, ive recently been teaching her to eat her food of my finger in hopes it helps and she does eat the food but if theres no food she will flare. i’m just wondering if that means she’s gonna have a aggressive nature to any tank mates, i tried a few guppy friends that she was okay with but hated once i upsized her tank?, (i also didn’t know they couldn’t be together – they are split now) i was hoping to put a few small cory’s in her tank as she’s in a 40L alone but im worried to stress her or cause issues since i don’t really have more room if she doesn’t like the cory’s. i dont know if i should risk it at all.

I have a female Betta and a male Dwarf Gourami both in a 55 gallon community tank with 40+ other fish so I figured I’d chime in here. Bettas will always have an aggressive nature towards other “bright” coloured fish as will male Gouramis, the key is to have enough plants or decorations to constantly break the line of sight between the fish so they don’t always see one another. That being said, if your female is showing signs of aggression already your best bet is to stick with your Cory idea but you’d be better off removing the Betta and rearranging the tank for the Corys to get used to for about a day or so prior to introducing your Betta. This will give the Corys time to find hiding spots if they need to run away or feel secure.
