Hi! Another teacher’s class pet was going to stay at school over break and I felt bad about that so I offered to take him in until we go back to school. I’m looking for some advice on how to make Fred’s stay with me comfortable and to make sure he looks okay.
Thanks!

That fish needs a real tank and no less than 5 gallons, filtered, water cycled. Your teacher is not a responsible owner.
He’s sitting on the bottom because he’s miserable. Your teacher needs to rehome it or actually take care of it. Not a good example for kids
Is it just me, or am I seeing ich? Fred appears to have a lot of white spots on his body. If so, he’ll need medicated treatment that’s often available at pet stores or online.
Poor guy. Thank you for making sure he has care over the holidays. There’s a great care sheet on this sub that nails the basics, but trust that it won’t be super cheap to get him everything he needs. If you’re willing to invest anything in his care, I’d say focus on getting a larger tank, filter, water heater, gravel or sand substrate, and as many real or silk plants as you can. You can check places like Facebook marketplace or your local classifieds for some really good deals.
They need a five gallon tank with a filter and a heater. The water needs to have time to cycle as well once you get started with a better set up. Not (just) water changing, rather you’re establishing the nitrogen cycle in the water. It can be intimidating, but it’s basically boils down to so the fish doesn’t choke to death in the ammonia from its poo, and breaks it down better.
I should add- I have an axolotl at home 🙂 She’s well taken care of in 40 gal with sand and real plants and weekly water changes. I have API master test kit. Can I use some of her cycles water for Fred?
Love teachers not taking the time to *learn* proper care, and then *teach* improper care to their students 🫠
