Planning on using for freshwater. Don't know what species I can target with it. Was thinking maybe along the lines of large catfish, sturgeon and maybe musky.

Know nothing of rods in that category. But own 6 Peen reels, 4 of which are about 30yrs old and still in service. Good luck – Penns are workhorses.

I just paired a Battle 3 with an Ugly Stik Bigwater 12′ and I’m liking it. 50lb Big Game braid from Berkley.
Not quite dedicated but this is my snagging rig, will also be used for tossing big cut and live bait.

These spools are not designed for braid because of the rounded lip. Youre restricted to either mono or fireside.
Rod is dependent on how much weight you wanna throw, I cant really think of a freshwater application for this other than throwing big baits for catfish or sturgeon.

I’ve got the 6500 ss that I use for crab snaring. 65 pound braid works just fine on it. I can’t remember if I put a mono backing on it or not, to prevent slipping. It’ll work fine for your large target species.
