Found a k drill setup on marketplace for 300. Seller is giving me the 8.5in for 300 and not the 7.5in. The drill is a dcd999 hammer drill. Is that sufficient enough? Will the battery in the photo work with the drill for the auger?

I currently have a jiffy gas auger that is extremely bulky and heavy and it took me a good 10mins to get started yesterday.

Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. It should be good enough….The K-drill wants like 700lb of torque or more and this should do it. Dill mode, NOT hammer mode.

I’ve used my buddy’s K drill and it’s super efficient. Just keep the battery off the ice and it should last. Down the line you might want a second battery for longer days.

The 999 is a HOG. It will punch holes just fine. Ice depth with determine how many holes you get from a 5ah battery but you should be able to get quite a few. Probably not 30 but at least 10

I run the same drill on a 8” and don’t have any issues. I have the clam drill plate so wife can use it more easily. It’s so torquey it can be hard to hold onto. Should be just fine if you leave the handle on it.

That’s the same setup I’m using, and it’s going into its third season. You’ll want more batteries if you’re drilling through thicker ice and doing some hole hopping, but other than that, it’s been good.

We had 3 feet of ice last winter, and the 5 ah could still do a couple holes on a single charge.

That is enough drill for sure. 5 amp battery will help in the cold.

Look at the gear you already have. If you are a Milwaukee, Makita, whatever guy, I would think about staying with the same brand for Cordless tools. Batteries are interchangeable that way.

You do not need a crazy drill for this set up. Eskimo 8″ were on sale for 179 at farm and fleet last week and they are NICE.

    My two cents anyways.

Depends on how much ice you have that will probably drill 30-40 holes in 8-10 inches of ice.

  8. I use a Milwaukee 5ah most of the time with my Liteflite and I drop a bar or two tops. I drill a lot of holes too. Northern IL. I have 12 and 2 8 forges but I only grab one of those if the ice is really thick just in case I get really hole crazy. My 5’s have been fine.

Doing stuff with a buddy who uses his dewalt stuff 6-7 days a week (contractor)I’ve been super impressed how long his batteries hold up. Made me realize how chitty my bigger Ridgid batteries were.
