I know what Elk Hair Caddis are and some of my nymphs, but can someone ID the groups of flys in the perspective color grouping for both the drys and nymphs? Also when would I use them vs a different one? I live in southwest virginia/east TN. Thank you for all the help!

All dry flies for large caddis and or larger stone flies. They will be best in a freestone river with large rocks cold water and lots of oxygen in water where this type of insects live

  2. In simple terms, you fish mayfly and caddis (and stonefly) dries when adult bugs are on the surface of the water and fish are feeding on them. You don’t need to know the names of the flies or the insects, but the size, type, and color of the fly should be as close as possible to the natural insects. If you can’t match, use a smaller, darker fly.

Literally, see fish eating a bug, catch a bug, look through your box for a fly to match.

Look up videos on matching hatches.

This is stuff you learn over time. Knowing the insects that fish eat in your local waters is something that will increase your success. Eventually your knowledge of that gets much more detailed.

Mostly but any fly can be suggestive or an attractor. Use the ones that float best and you can see . With those kind of flies and a little bigger size fish will eat them or strike them even if there is not a hatch. Sometimes it takes multiple floats over top of the fish.

A purple haze is a slower water mayfly pattern. Fish see it as a darker belly fly. It is an excellent fly but does not float well in rough water ,,like many of the flies you are showing and yes you could use an elk caddis for almost all caddies situations but we all love trying new flies
