I have never owned a beta before and I was wondering if this was correct. This was at my local PetSmart. Sorry about the glare on the paper.

I have a 10 gallon tank that I am waiting for my last hermit crab to finish molting before emptying it out. I have been looking into beta and I am hoping for some good care tips.

  1. it’s all generally true but the sorority tank… they tend to be controversial with great points on both sides of if they are good or not. i do think they need to specify how big the tank needs to be in the first one. bettas need 5gal + the bigger the better when you have a short fin.

  2. Info is mostly good, but imo they shouldn’t mention sorority keeping at all. Even experienced keepers shouldn’t attempt a sorority with betta splendens.

  3. Yea sounds about right, could probably do without mentioning sorority’s & could have mentioning what fish bettas are good with / not good with (guppy’s are bad, tetra are fine for example) but a decent start

  4. Pretty good! I agree that mentioning sororities is probably a no-no, but depending on the store maybe they get a lot of customers asking about them?

  5. Their facts are retorted with their own misinformation.

If a customer needs to learn these “facts”, they shouldn’t be encouraged to find out if their new betta has the personality to have tankmates. Because, there’s only one way to find out.

Bettas found in fish stores aren’t bred to fight. They’re bred for the pet trade. There aren’t backyard betta fighting rings in seedy back lots around the suburbs. They *will fight* if put together, but see above.

The info they’re displaying should focus on properly cycling a tank and nothing else. Petco and Petsmart put up flyers like this, but still sell fish to people along with a brand new tank, knowing the fish are going straight in without being cycled. But, that’s how they make their money.
