Hello folks,
Been doing some euro nymphing over the past week and have landed a few fish. All relatively small (<10 inches).
I’m just now beginning to look into specific flies to build my box out and am looking for some help.
The main issue I’ve had is judging my fly weight and whether I’m going too heavy or too light.
I purchased some 3.3mm tungsten bead perdigons and some hackled PTN’s also with 3.3mm bead. While fishing these I did land some fish but I’m struggling to figure out whether I’m overweighted. I touch bottom fairly regular and while I have snagged and lost a few, sometimes a light lift frees the fly and it continues to drift, albeit with a fair bit of bobbing on the sighter. (Too heavy? Idk..) I’ve dropped into brass beaded flies a few times but they seem to be pulled and ripped in the current and my sighter doesn’t slow at all.
Other than the tungsten flies I purchased, I was given a few random beaded nymphs from a friend to try it out, but these feel just too light. I have a small set of jewellery scales and am currently weighing each fly to set my box up right.
Can anyone recommend me some flies (more weight than actual fly tbh) to fish a medium freestone river over the winter and into the trout season? Due to the weather over here (Scotland) the rivers are a fair bit pushier than a few months ago but still very fishable.
My flies are 0.4g down to 0.1g so far.
Thanks and tight lines.
