I keep seeing these really neat underwater caves for sale, and I think they’re visually very cool but would bettas like them? They seem like they give a great hiding spot but also they like being readily able to be by the surface.

I feel like this leaves no swimming space (or water volume in general) for the fish. While bettas do appreciate hiding places, they dont dwell amongst rocks and in caves. Kuhli loaches and maybe corydoras would probably like this though! But for a betta a heavily planted jungle tank is a lot more appropriate. 🙂
In my experience, these caves require a ton of extra maintenance to keep them from filling up with substrate and debris
Don’t do it.
I’m curious how big the actual tank is. Because neon tetras are pretty tiny, and it looks pretty big in that tank.
Edit: Sausage fingers be sausaging
I honestly love the under substrate cave in tanks… I really considered putting in one of those L bracket style ones in the corner of my tank but decided against it ultimately.
I think if you had a very curious betta fish that had short fans and liked to dive deep they might occasionally swim there. I think it would be a good idea if you wanted to have a lot of shrimp that you wanted a hiding spot from your betta from. I think you’d really have to consider filtration flow and the way the water moves around the tank if you have a large cavernous cave in the bottom of your tank.
I do love the look though and I wish I knew how to functionally utilize these in an ecosystem because they are way cool.
I would not do this for a betta. My other concern with these is water flow, I worry it would get too stagnant and become a little pocket of toxic water.
He’ll probably check it out once then never again lol
I have a smaller one in my 33g and my giant betta was the only one that used it. Except for a lone ember tetra that discovered it after the betta had passed.
Shallow horizontal would be better for a betta. This tank is so pretty though
