I caught this guy from a slow moving stream in Malaysia. It stay below grasslike vegetation on the bank of the stream. I had found betta pugnax in all type of habitats such as fast moving river (often found large males mouthbrooding their fry on the riverbank where tree roots and driftwood form a barrier that slow down the water), slow and fast moving stream, and swampy black water area. The larger males are often more beautiful (i think its becuz they are the dominant male). You can often find a numbers of male within the same area, with larger male occasionally chasing smaller male (for territory). For unknown reason, i had never caught any females. Maybe they hide in other area where males are not commonly found?
