hi all!

I’m currently setting up my first real tank, a 6.8 gal for my betta, and i’m super excited. I’m working on the hardscape currently (pic attached, super WIP just have got the wood positioning figured out so far), hoping to have that wrapped up by the end of today.

I have my male betta in a 2.5 gal right now, so i can’t wait to get him into his new home. what would be an ideal stock for this tank size/layout? my betta seems to have a pretty chill personality, but ofc I won’t know for sure until I see him with some tankmates. I would love to have some little shrimp and/or a couple corys, to help maintain the tank cleanliness… would this be a good plan? are there any variations of cory that would be better? I don’t want to overcrowd ofc, and I’ve read that some of the smaller corys are schooling types, so would need around 6, which I’m feeling might be too much for this size of tank? but I am still quite new to all of this, so i’d love some outside opinions. tia!

I don’t recommend any tank mates with a betta in a tank that size. Bettas require a minimum of 5gal dedicated space.

  2. Snails might work. Anything else isnt a great idea. You can see how they do with a few snails and then try a bigger species of shrimp.

  3. Cory bottom Fish , expensive though as you need like 10 per tank and they are community type’s

I have 2 nerite snails and a bunch of shrimp in mine (10g). I waited until the plants grew loads to provide lots of hiding spaces, then added shrimp a good week before my betta so they could learn the hiding spots. It’s going well 4 months on! If you’re going to add shrimp I’d recommend the above, but also feed your betta really well the days before/after putting him in the tank so he’s not inclined to go hunting.
