I got this driftwood off of Amazon and I don’t want tannins in my tank so I’ve soaked in in hot water for the past 2 weeks. It’s still releasing tannins. Today I just tried to boil it is that discoloration ok. Note the second picture is what I’ve been soaking them in

  1. I just got a similar product off of Amazon, what worked for me was boiling for like 5hrs, swapping for freshwater about halfway through, then leaving the wood in the hot water overnight to cool, the water was about that color. I am assuming you can boil for less time I just had a piece that wouldnt sink. I have the wood in my tank with water now and it is very clear, no issues.

  2. Tannins are good. But I understand you. Its gonna take a couple if days, and boiling sessions, depending on the size of the wood to get a decent amount out. But you’ll never get it completely out. Boil it for an hour, put new water, keep at it for a couple of times. Just leaving it in water will take AGES.

  3. Some driftwood I’ve boiled for an over 12 hours (over several days) changing the water a few times during each boil to reduce tannins.  Certain woods and newer (not fully dried out/old) wood will leech more.
