I just got a new betta fish from pet smart and within a week of getting him he’s gone from being beautiful and vibrant to sickly and his fins are now sticking together. I tried water changes and his temperatures are good. He wouldn’t eat so I gave him 2 blood worms and he ate those but then I was concerned with swim bladder because he was swimming weird so I stopped and he pooped but then still wouldn’t eat pellets so I had to give him blood worms again. I can’t figure out what’s wrong with him.

  1. Sherbet-Ice-Cream on

    Tank size is10 gallons
    Yes heater and filter
    Tank temp 80
I don’t have anything to test the water so I put him in spring water to try to rule out water issues
I bought the tank used from someone online
    No tank mates

I put him in a smaller container inside of the tank because he could swim well so I took some water out so he could still swim ok

  2. Fin melt fin rot, a bit more of a bitch to get rid of in my experience. You can try setting up a hospital tank and treating with kanaplex. If that doesn’t work you can try Maracyn 2.

  3. You can try adding a little aquarium salt. The API aquarium salt carton says to use the dosage of one tablespoon (3 teaspoons) per 5 gallons of water. You can start with less, like one teaspoon per 5 gallons of water and see how it goes, and work to that dosage if you think it would be more useful. Add an air stone if you don’t have one running yet. Do a water change if it looks like they are getting stressed. Make sure to just use pure salt, with no additives, if you don’t get the API aquarium salt, and note that the API aquarium salt is more coarse with larger grains, so the dosage would be less for smaller grains.
