i'm upgrading my tank from a 5 gallon to a 10 and was wondering if you guys thought this desk is able to support the weight? the 5 gallon won't be up here anymore. The desk is a few years old but is in great shape, I'm just scared of it not being able to support the bigger tank. What do you guys think? (the bigger tank is not fully decorated I need to go to the pet store tomorrow)

  1. What is the desk made out of?

I personally wouldn’t risk it, but I’m also paranoid of water getting everywhere

There are some metal adjustable shelves (I can try to look at what search terms you need to use to find them) that are pretty inexpensive that come in different sizes and generally have a pretty decent weight limit. Not just per shelf, but per entire unit.

If you know where you got the desk, you can always see if you can find a listing of a weight limit

  2. It doesn’t look like the best option but I don’t think the desk will crumble apart. I would put it where the 5 gallon is when you can just because that area has more support. I got some floating plants dwarf hair grass and a bulb kit for mine and it gives him a lot to hang out in and around. I had little logs for shrimp and he got stuck so be super careful with decor with small holes. I’m sure your buddy will be very happy for the upgrade!

  3. I had a 55 gallon tall on a pressboard Ikea desk for almost 6 months and it never budget. This desk could easily support 29 gallons forever (300ish lbs) overtop of the shelving area.

I feel like it’d be fine! But also I don’t have a ton of experience. I’d put it over the shelving side to be safe

Go take a look at the thrift stores this weekend and maybe you will find something nice but personally I think it would be fine on the far left.
