I'm still learning and trying to get all the info I can so I thought I'd ask here in case someone has good advice for this river or winter fishing in general.
I'm going to the gunpowder river tomorrow, forecast says sunny and high of 47, current water temp is 40 so hopefully trout will be more active. Apparently they also just released water from the dam so it went from being like 30 cfs to 155 cfs, right at the dam (2.15ft height)
I've been told the way to fish in winter river is to go for the tailwater (near the dam) and also to focus on deeper pockets. I've also been told to go for a double-nymph rig. The guy at the shop last time gave me two small nymphs one that's all black and looks like this and one that's purple and looks like this, so apparently a regular black nymph and purple prince.
My questions are:
1.) Are tailwaters and deep pockets the right thing to go for, esp. considering the increased flow (155 cfs near the dam)?
2.) Are those nymph choices right?
3.) Any general tips on how to fish this river from those that have had success before around this time of year?
Thanks!
