Not sure what I did wrong. Casted and heard a small snap, and the bottom two parts of the rod disconnected during cast. Had this rod about 12 days and used it daily for 3-6 hours.

  1. I’ve only ever had this happen if I didn’t have the ferrules snug, which sounds like might of happened here.

The good news is Orvis has a great warranty. In most cases you should be able to order the part online for around $60 (I believe), and have it in your hands in a few days.

It happened to me on a rod when I went a little overboard with a heavy streamer and thought it would be fun to try to get all the flyline in the air. I probably overloaded the rod and made it crack like that on two ferrules.

The other time I was fishing weighted nymphs and I messed up the cast and it bounced off the rod and when i threw out the next cast it broke the ferrule.

If neither of the above happened, it could simply be a dud from the production line. Sucks though.

Same thing happened on one of their rods for me. Haven’t used them since and never had the problem reoccur

Only brand ive had to warranty so far….never had to warranty a Winston, Sage or Scott yet.

  5. This kind of break is 100% user error. (No offense; I’ve done this on my own rod before.) It’s not the manufacturer’s fault. If your ferrules aren’t snug, the male end exerts too much stress on the weakest part of the female end, causing this cracking. Whenever you’re casting a lot—especially with heavy flies or sinking tips—you need to periodically check your ferrules to make sure they’re seated well.

I used to work for Orvis & as a rod-repairman (I have that exact rod in a spey model). I may be wrong but from your pic it looks like the epoxy on the thread wraps is cracked, but I don’t see a crack in the blank itself? If that’s the case I wouldn’t be afraid to fish

Take it to a store if there’s one near you. if you can show you bought it 12 days ago they might replace it in store. We’d do that at the store I worked at. Or call customer service and see what they say, might waive the $60! I’ve had them make it $30 instead of $60 when my H3 broke twice in 6ish months.
