Hi all – recently switched from an old 2 person suitcase style shanty to a larger 3 person pop up. The condensation today is really, really bad – like it’s dripping from the ceiling.
I upgraded my heater too (bigger space, needs more heat – seems logical to me) but I’m wondering if this also is causing the condensation.
Any/all advice is appreciated! Currently still on the ice and probably will be for a little while yet. Slow day – all I’ve caught was the little guy in the last photo!

It’s a non insulated hut so it will condensate try putting a trap over it I’ve heard that’s helps open door a little that’s the reason I got a insulated one
This type of condensation happens when warm humid air comes in contact with an extremely cold surface, such as the shack wall. The only way to remedy this is to either keep your heater on a lower setting or to get an insulated shack so that the walls aren’t as cold.
Shack needs insulation. Cold outside plus a wet heat source (propane) equals condensation. GL keep lines tight 👍
That 2nd pic is your problem.
I didn’t know this until this year, but it makes sense in retrospect – burning propane produces a ton of water. That water vapor condenses on the cold walls of your shanty.
I ended up always having to air out/dry out my shanty after using it. Now I minimize the amount of time I run the propane and if I do, I try to increase the ventilation which has helped.
I believe this is why diesel heaters have become so popular (dry heat).
Maybe a small squeegee would help to get the condensation off the walls before you tear down? I haven’t tried this as the ventilation seems to help.
You’re using a non vented propane heater. Propane combustion is very damp because there’s a ton of hydrogen in propane and it mixes with the air to make water.
Insulated shelters with a fan to circulate the air will help. But nothing beats a vented heater of some sort.
Open up the vents on the top of your tent. I have a non-insulated pop-up too and use a propane buddy. I’ve been out in negative digits and never had nearly this much condensation. Getting out to walk around and check the tip-ups (and a bit of fresh air) ventilates the moist air out too.
You gotta stop all that breathing!!!! Jk it’s your Mr buddy 🙂 I get the same thing & just live w the drips 🙂
Thanks everyone – good to know. Maybe I’ll see if I can rig up some type of insulation for the ceiling (blankets or towels maybe? I dunno – it’s slow so I’ve got nothing but time to think lol) a fan to circulate the air is already in my Amazon cart lol
A byproduct of burning propane is moisture. If your tent isn’t insulated this is going to happen and there’s not really much you can do about it.
