Never in my years of betta keeping have I ever had one simply disappear. I got a new betta Saturday and acclimated him to a 5 gallon, heavily planted tank with 2 shrimp and multiple snail companions. (This tank had been cycling for almost a year so it was pretty ready for the addition of a fish). I did everything right and ensured my water parameters were good and the temperature was 78 and made sure to slowly acclimate him to both the new water and temp. When I let him go in the tank he was perfect. Swimming around, checking the surroundings, and even ate. Everything was going so well. Monday morning I turn on the light, drop a couple pellets in, and leave for work. I get home and go to turn off his lights and see how much he ate and hes gone. Nowhere to be seen. I ended up taking everything out of the tank. Every single plant and looking through them. Nothing. There was a small gap in the glass and him being a pretty tiny betta he maybe could've jumped through. But he wasn't swimming erratically the past 2 days he was pretty calm. I can't understand why he would have jumped out because the water seemed perfect. I looked around my entire kitchen and even into the living room. Nothing. No water splashes. No dry fish. Its possible my dog could have got to him before me but I would think it would be messy. There's simply nothing. Like he went through 60 million years of evolution overnight, sprouted legs, and walked out the door. I didn't get enough time with him to give him a proper name, however I have decided to name him Houdini. The one fish thats ever absolutely swindled me.

Man…one of those things that’s pretty frustrating…
My guess is that he jumped and got eaten by your dog..dogs are generally good clean up crew…
Just a betta doing betta things…even a happy betta will jump regardless if the tank is stable…
