This is Tangy, sold as a tangerine koi betta. I’ve had him for nearly 2 weeks. He’s in a cycled 5 gallon tank alone at the moment. Parameters are as they should be according to the API freshwater master test kit. Just started the process of cycling a 10 gallon tank for him but it won’t be ready for a while.
He was in the jar at Petco for a little over 2 months so I’m thinking the damage to his tail is probably fin rot, but I’d love to hear any other thoughts. I did start kanaplex yesterday.
He is not a strong swimmer and needs lots of breaks and places to rest, but he tries his hardest and is as active as he can be. His body is a bit curved to one side which seems to be at least partially to blame for his poor swimming. I also think that is why he rests in this unusual upright position.
I have lots of meds on hand that I have read about on this forum, just in case they become necessary. I’m in central Wyoming so there aren’t many options available so I’d rather be prepared.
Also, I have more plants on the way.
I’d love any advice or thoughts from veteran betta owners. Especially regarding his tail and swimming style.

You can use blackwater (tanins) to help with finrot and other various ailments that are bacterial or fungal. Kanaplex is kinda last resort thing. I’d opt for almond leaves and boil them to make blackwater tea and do that as well as water changes. It’s great too for lowering PH.
