Trying to catch these steelies with my heavy indicator rig (large oros, one split shot, nymph, and bead).

I start from a down stream with maybe 30ft of line out, too much to roll cast or water load. I pull some in and cast to 1, swing the line back to cast 2 behind me, and then to 3. I don’t false cast at all, just 3 reposition casts.

I feel like this looks stupid but I can’t figure out how to get this style casting down. Would appreciate any advice

  1. 30 ft w that rig is out of my wheelhouse. That sounds tricky. I’m commenting so other replies will pop up for me, I’m curious to see how that’s done.

You could try fishing it downstream instead of up. Stand at the top of the hole, cast out, keep a bunch of line free in your line hand and let it out as your indicator floats downstream to get your drift. Not perfect but it works for these heavy rigs

  3. I’d think with a steelhead rod you should be able to water load this rig. Mass carries mass and all that. One of Lefty Kreh’s casting methods for salt flies in wind involves pulling the line like a haul with the rod down and pointed at the rig to begin generating speed before even moving the rod.

2 to 3 looks like a water load to me?

That said, heavy indicator rigs are a pain to cast nicely. A Belgian cast/open loops is the key.
