I got this 16” fire eel about two weeks ago and I have been really struggling to get him to eat.

I’ve tried:

Live Red wigglers (They have eaten these at my LFS)

Frozen Blood worms

Raw shrimp

And while he seems unbothered by the tongs when they’re in his face, he refuses to eat from them. He sticks in his cave most the time which is expected but even when he’s out at night I’ve had no luck.

For the past week my strategy has been to place be above foods in a little cup in front of his cave and turn off all the lights. While the food does disappear I have no way to tell he’s eating it or if its one of my Geophagus.

I have the tank set at 84 to hopefully speed up his metabolism but still no luck.

Anybody have any insight?

Maybe he is not feeling well – or like my eel (much smaller type) he has found some snack (small shrimp, baby fish) elsewhere

Edit: only life food is accepted

They tend to eat live food only in my experience.. Mine turned down red wigglers after a few months and was horrified of earthworms

  3. I started zebra stripe eel by offering cubes of frozen bloodworms using a set of long tongs.
It took a couple of weeks but now she comes up to grab the cube.
