My male betta keeps doing this swim pattern then goes to the top of the tank and doesn’t move for a few minutes then repeats.
Before this I had tested the water which came back normal and then I did a 10% water change because I noticed detritus worms on the walls (I think new floater plants brought it in).

My fish does this too- she’s a female koi betta and she wall surfs for a bit then swims around her tank then does it again
I think it’s because you have the light on in a dark room. He can clearly see his reflection and the are territorial. It can be good for them if they’re flaring their gills as it is stimulating for them. I’m assuming constant reflection could stress out the fish though.
Mine does this alot too. And flares gills alot. Cant tell whats happening tho, someone people say its bad and they’re stressed, some say its good they’re energetic and playing.
Mine eats food I drop right away, if he sees me in the area and I open the flap he circles the surface waiting for me to drop it.
So cant really tell
Maybe put some more leafy plants in there where he could explore and hide. And almond leaf is pretty good for calming them.
Get some tall grass and a Amazon sword in there. He needs cover and hiding spots.
Try to see if he does this a lot when you aren’t right up by the tank. Mine seems to do this when I’m within a few feet of the tank, but I never see him do it from across the room. If he’s just doing it alone all the time, something might be up: seeing his reflection as others have said, etc.
