Wondering where I should fish on this lake for lake trout. I have caught them on that 56 foot flat below that deep basin, but I was wondering if another spot like the steep drop on the top right could produce more? Any help is greatly appreciated! Smelt based lake

  1. Find the smelt and you should find the trout. Lake trout will feed up in the water column wherever the bait is. You don’t always need to target lake trout on bottom. I’ve caught them mid water column in 80-100 feet of water in the middle of big schools of cisco. Other good places to try are the bottom of steep drops in deep water.

  2. LockPsychological329 on

Smelt can be pretty shallow in winter. I’ve caught lakers through the ice anywhere from shallow sandy flats near tribs in 3 feet of water out to around 60 feet. The deeper fish are usually around structure. Find humps that are 25-40 feet deep with deep water nearby. Fish the top of the humps and down the drops.
