Always dreamt of an aquarium, my wife was not fond of the idea (she is now). Just as I was regaining interest in it, I came across this tank, thrown away.

Used lava rocks as substrate – bought a cheap bag for garden decoration, soaked and washed thoroughly.

Other rocks collected on several hikes (the big ones are also lava rocks).

I used plastic foam (used in packaging) underneath everything, to distribute weight and as additional porous area for bacteria.

Sticks were also collected and boiled. Did float initially, but less so now.

I also added a netted bag of planter soil under the big rocks, for nutrients.

Added plastic grass to background mainly to hide wires and make it less boring.

Extended the filter's output with a plastic tube (seen on 2nd pic) to improve flow, it also adds air bubbles.

The plants are cuttings of my potted plants, tied to the sticks for support.

Also added moss and dried leaves collected near my apartment.

Stocked with 5 neocardinia and 8 cardinal tetras, but I'll probably add more shrimp.

It is finally complete after 3 months (for now..)

Any suggestions on beautifying the rim?

I don't want to remove it as that might compromise the structural integrity and lead to leaking. I thought of covering it with wood paneling or something..
