Hi, I'm very very new to this hobby even though I've been wanting to start it years ago. My parents impulsively bought a betta fish without my knowledge a week ago without a tank and I persuaded them to at least get a tank and filter. They got the smallest possible tank, only 1.8 gallon. So I rush to buy and get everything set up and have only start cycling this 10 gallon tank two days ago while my betta is in the temporary tank. Will be getting water test kit, some salvinia and heater soon as well as the heater I bought prior broke. Will also be adding some tannin in too.
I want to ask if there's enough shade for the betta and if I can possibly add some small tank mates after the tank is cycled before adding my betta in as I know betta is territorial.
Any suggestions/advice will be appreciated! Sorry for the lengthy post and thanks in advance!

this tank is super gorgeous! what traits are you looking for on possible tank mates? honestly your setup looks really good, I think the only thing I’d personally add would be a taller plant or two in the back(bonus if the leaves are somewhat close to the surface, some bettas love to lay and rest on spots near the surface so they don’t have to swim far for air)
I’d recommend neocaradina shrimp as tank mates, you should be able to start with as little as 5 or 6 and they will reproduce until you have a strong colony. Your betta should leave the adults alone, he will occasionally pick off some babies however you have heaps of plant cover so plenty will grow to adult hood and it’s great enrichment for them (plus a free snack)
Ooh also it would look super cool if you added some moss on top of the larger piece of wood to act as a little bed for him near the surface
Looks great, but definitely needs a lid.
