Couldn’t seem to find the right answer so here we are! Just wasn’t sure how the tapered leader loop and the fly line loop are meant to sit or if I’ve done it right? I know there’s a few ways to join it including just axing the loop off and doing something else but I’m beginner as. It looks ugly and catches my guides, but if it’s right I ain’t gonna argue 🤣 cheers guys

  1. Fly line through leader loop, leader tag through fly line loop for loop to loop connection.

I’ll say loop again just because. Loop.

Since there’s no banana for scale, what weight is the fly line? And what’s the leader x-size/ lb test?

Looks like a chunky loop to loop, but that should be out of your eye tip when you’re casting, no? Aside from fixing ugliness, chop the loop and nail knot a 4-6”piece of mono on there, and put the loop in that. Most of the fly lines I’ve gotten second hand have had that done.

    This looks good.

I use braided loop connects that i attach to the leader. Then do a loop to loop without a messy chunky knot.

  4. Like others are saying, the connection is fine. Just don’t strip / reel in line too far, this connection shouldn’t ever be inside your guides when fishing.

I cut the loop off the leader and clench knot to the welded loop of the fly line. Doesn’t get hung up in the guides that way.

This is more saltwater thing so take it for what it’s worth:

You can put a twist in the loop of the leader and double the contact area on the fly line. You can even triple it if you want. This spreads out the force on the fly line loop and prevents the mono from cutting into the coating. Again, it’s more of a concern when dealing with sportier saltwater species and the lines associated with those setups. It may help slow some wear and tear on freshwater lines though.

This video is for connecting backing but it shows the same effect.

Edit: btw, a nonslip mono knot is less bulky than the loop knot that’s tied in the mono in your picture.

(Also, don’t cut the loop off until/unless you fish that fly line to the point you’ve worn out the original welded loop. Just my opinion.)

This will fish! Next step would be to nail knot your leader straight to the fly line. That removes a hinge point and improves your casting.

Not a necessity, but after doing it on a couple of my lines I do notice a huge difference in accuracy.
