Set up a new aquarium December 29th, cycled and on got plants and noticed by Jan 5th I brought home snails as stowaways. Fast forward to Jan 19th I got 6 neon tetra and 1 assassin snail. Only one tetra has survived to today Feb 3rd. However while working this morning I watched this thing swoop next to my moss patch past the tetra. I am not sure if it is a shrimp? A bug? Do I need to catch it? It’s pretty evasive. I did not buy him!

  1. That’s a damselfly nymph. It’s also relatively mature judging by the wing pads, so will likely moult into an adult damselfly soon.

  2. That little guy is a nuke in disguise. I know you are already, but you should put all available effort into finding and removing him and his friends

  3. Off topic, but what kind of sand are you using? Looks kind of like live sand for a reef tank, but I’m guessing you’re freshwater based on the fish and plants.

If it is live sand (aragonite and crushed coral) it will be raising pH and hardness significantly which could be impacting your fish, and will make it very difficult to grow most freshwater plants.
