Hello. So i’m visiting a friends house occasionally to feed her fish for the past month and i’ve been noticing this white stuff is on the tank. I’m not sure how long it’s been there but it’s definitely been more than a month.
Unfortunately, i made a huge mistake. I touched it today just by accident and then forgot it was on my fingers and scratched my ears etc. i have really stuffy ears today for some reason so i was trying to open them up with my fingers which was a stupid idea and now i’m worried about my health due to the contaminated hands. Also i’m worried whether this white stuff is my fault and i’ve ruined my friends tank.
I asked chatgpt this question and got responses such as this is brain eating amoeba so obviously now I’m panicking but trying to think of other scenarios here haha. Sorry if this is not the place to ask this!
I just want to identify this white matter.

Looks like mold
Looks like a mix of mold + fish food + rust. it’s most likely nothing major if it’s not leaching into the water itself , but pls clean it ( try equal parts citric acid and water )
Mold feeding on the nutrients of the extra food and with the tank humidity as its constant source of water. Water source + nutrients + time = mold
I agree with the other commenter; it’s mold. You can remove it with a rag or paper towel and isopropyl alcohol. Make sure neither it or the alcohol get into the tank
You can use a flush bulb from the drug store to clean out your ears. I mix warm water with either salt or hydrogen peroxide to make an antimicrobial rinse
Is that where you have been dropping food into the tank? Flakes? That’s most likely moldy fish food.
Hey even if it is brain eating amoeba you should be fine those guys are only dangerous if they get in you nose anywhere should be good but wash your hands just in case you know?
Its mold. Honestly a perfect growing area. Water provides humidty and all the fish food provides food. Id remoce the lid and clean it since i doubt its black mold or anything harmful just dont eat it or anything. And wash your hands next time lol.
Also chat GPT isnt google or anything itll tell you what you want most of the time not strict facts.
Rotten fish food from sprinkling it on the lid instead of in the tank
Looks like the food sat there with moisture and grew mold. This has happened to my tank at the flap where you open for feeding. I’d just wipe it off and make sure you try to avoid spilling the food on the edges there if you can! 💗
Mold from fish food rest and humidity …
Dude clean your tank.. wtf
Looks like some mineral residue from water as well.
Fish flakes is basically just crude protein and corn starch, you cant just spill it all over the place and leave it to rot.
If it’s along the rim of the tank, then I suspect it’s hard water deposits. If it’s very crusty, and hard to remove, and if it’s only located on parts of the tank that aren’t underwater, then that would be my guess.
Oh, and Brain Eating Amoeba is microscopic and not visible to the human. Also rubbing anything into your eye that isn’t supposed to be there will cause eye irritation and discomfort. That doesn’t mean it’s some kind of pathogen, lol.
Get some acetic acid ear drops from the pharmacy, and clotrimazole cream for the infection. 👍 The acid is to seep into your skin and keep the surface from growing more fungus and the clotrimazole will kill the fungus.
It looks like hard water mineral deposits and some fish flakes. If you got some in your ears, they might become irritated. I don’t think it will harm you.
