Found this old Sabre Golden #1301 11 foot rod up in my attic. My dad brought it home when I was a kid.
I’m going to use it to hopefully long cast from shore to structures or reefs deeper in. I was thinking of pairing it with either a Daiwa BG 5k or 6.5k, maybe a penn battle 6k.
Do you think 6k is too big? Target species is Sheepshead and Rockfish using bait, maybe a 4-6oz sinker with 50lb braid.
Also don’t know much about this rod, not sure if anyone can provide some info on it. Google search just shows it’s a vintage rod. Hope to get some use from it, looks to be in good condition.
Will upgrade the rod in a few months to maybe a 12 footer. so I plan on getting a decent reel now and just swapping it over.
Thanks in advance!
Will be mostly used in Southern California.

cool older fiberglass surf rod.
unfortunately old rods degrade and it wont be as reliable or have as much snap as when it was newish. also those guides are simple metal, no ceramic inserts, modern braid (with saltwater and sand as lubricant) will cut through the metal fairly quickly.
i recommend finding a new 12′ (or whatever you want) rod sooner rather than later, and pair that with your chosen modern surf reel and braid.
save this for someone (maybe you in the future) who will use it with a similar vintage surf reel and mono line.
