He was very white when I first got him and I’m learning as a new betta owner, yes the glass is dirty lol… and the water is a bit low, I need to do a cleaning soon. 🙂

His name is Vince Gills. Any tips to make him happier?

  1. Thank you for saving him!

You can get a lot more plants and maybe a piece of driftwood or spiderwood. They like to have a few hiding spots. I would also add floating plants so the light gets dimmed. My girl also likes to “hunt” just underneath the floaters.
I would also buy catappa leaves, just boil one for a few minutes, let it cool down and put it in the tank. Catappa leaves give off tannins that are healthy for the water and for them.

Edit: also be mindfull of your heater, most need to be almost fully submersed otherwise they can break!

make sure ur heater is FULLY submerged because it can like. malfunction and explode if you dont

to answer your question about making him happier, try to fill the tank up more heavily with plants, this will make the water quality better for him and provide more natural hiding places and dark spots if hes ever feeling stressed, i would also add some floating plants to the tank, they do a really good job keeping the tank healthy and are very cheap to buy and easy to keep.

could i also ask why the tank water seems to be half empty?

  4. If I were you I’d get rid of the fake decor and get real driftwood and more live plants! And please don’t let the water level get this low again your heater can malfunction ❤️

SUMBMERGE THE HEATER!!! if you don’t it could break, electrocute the fish or even explode!!!

  6. Nice, but please always have your aquarium full of water, for his sake. And yes, the thermometer, it’s dangerous to have it out of the water!!

  7. Thank you all for the advice! I’m working on fixing the heater, and putting some more water in the tank. The water just evaporated a lol.
I’ll also look into more plants/ real driftwood! Thank you all again. 🙂

  8. It looks like the tank has a lid. If so you should definitely fill much closer to the top

  9. The heater needs to be completely submerged and you can also see on your filter where it says minimum water line and your water is not up there!!

  10. Ok so those ornaments are really toxic and killed my betta they leach paints on to the water slowly poisoning the fish

I thought we agreed to never buy from petco to save bettas? You aren’t helping ypu are showing the corporation that their inventory sells. Did OP get this one for free?

  12. It might not look the best, but you can put the heater horizontally or at an angle.

I’ve had one malfunction when I had the water halfway on purpose, it was fully submerged. Idk if it was a horrible coincidence or if it caused the malfunction, but it got up to 96°F within an hour. The betta was being treated for an illness, and died shortly after 😭

Just wanted to give you context as to why people are freaking out about the heater.
