If you have to ask, your betta will find a way to make it happen. Murphy’s Law and what not.

  2. I’d try to close the gap or make it even tighter, if possible, out of an abundance of caution… the chance of a betta making it thru that specific gap is very slim, as it would have to make the perfect jump in order to yeet itself out through there, but it def isn’t at a 0% chance/possibility.

  3. I’ve had them jump out of the “feeding slot” that was in the top of my lid. It was barely 1 1/2 inches by half an inch if I remember correctly.

  4. Id be more concerned about it jumping and getting absolutely impaled by that wire, I am not saying bettas don’t jump, because they definitely do, but out of all the bettas I have owned only 1 jumped because he was with a angelfish and the angel got to big for its britches and scared my poor boy straight out of the tank(he survived), but honestly if your water conditions are good and don’t have aggressive tank mates, I have never had a fish escape out the many gaps in my tank covers.

Your floating plants also make a good cover, doubt your fish will ever come out that way.

  5. Yes, and here’s a super duper tip.

Place some tape along the edge of the screen that lines up edge to edge then flip the screen over and place more tape where you placed the tape on the other side basically making a screen sandwich with tape being the bread. This will give you a strong outer edge of screen so that you can use tape to hold it down to the points of the tank without the screen pulling free or the tape holding it falling off.

Also do not use metal screen – instead use fiberglass. Metal has paint on it that can flake off into the tank and may cause issues with unknown chemicals entering the water.
