Picked up this older hobie mirage outback for $100. The drive is a little stiff but intact, rudder cables are shot, the seat has some dry rot and there are a few small cracks on the gunwales where the seat clips on.

It also came with a Hobie branded scupper cart. I've heard to avoid scupper carts, but this one being from the manufacturer should be okay, right?

I’m looking to fix this up and either resell it, or use for a backup boat. Not really sure if it’s worth the money, but it should be a fun project.

Does anyone know around what year this would have been produced or have any experience with this specific model?

  1. Last two digits of the HIN will be the model year [https://www.hobie.com/articles/boat-serial-number-location,15/](https://www.hobie.com/articles/boat-serial-number-location,15/) This one looks like its from 2005-2006 or so.

Not a bad pickup for $100. Those cracks look small and fixable and, most importantly, above the water line. The one where the seat clips in is going to be a high stress area so you might want to reinforce that repair a bit.

I wouldn’t try to resell it after repairing it – I don’t think the market for 20 year old DIY repaired kayaks is going to be lucrative lol.

Definitely an older model Outback. For that price you can’t beat it. Just pick up a Hobie plastic welder and take your time. If you are flexible you should be able to reach those cracks from both sides for a really solid repair. If you can’t reach the backside through the round hatch you might be able to find the rectangle hatch upgrade still and make it a larger hole.
