recently added my shrimp (hence the high water level) to my new 6.8 gallon (20” in length) shallow tank! (it has been cycled and nitrogen tested)
i was thinking of maybe stocking the tank with a betta fish, but was worried about the water height.
i previously had a 5.5 gallon tank here(with no lid but the water line dropped 0.75-1”) with a betta fish and shrimp, but the gap between the tank and the shelf top was only 1.5” (taller than the tank pictured)
now with the new tank, the gap between the tank and the shelf is 4.5”
and i’m curious of what the community’s experience with water lines and lidless tanks! so i’d love some suggestions, thanks in advance y’all🫶🏻
p.s. would love to also get a small school of nano fish (i.e. rasboras); would love some opinions/personal experience on that as well🫶🏻

The general recommendation here is to avoid lidless tanks altogether, especially because it’s only natural for your fish to jump (as they do in the wild) regardless of whether or not you have perfect parameters etc.
That being said, I broke my lid a year ago and haven’t replaced it and so kept a fish for that time with no trouble at all. I made sure to be diligent about keeping it at least 2-3 inches below the rim, but the temperament of my betta plays a big role in it too.
I think you should probably consider a lid if you want to be completely safe.
