Went out for the first time with my new kayak today. Where and how do I find the fish? Depth is up to 250m/820ft.

I believe I can see up to 15m/50ft and I didn't see any fish at all. The water has 5°C/41°F.

At about 5m I found weeds but also there I didn't see any fish at all.

Do I need to go even deeper with a fish finder?

  1. What species are you looking for? I personally would troll a smaller medium diving crank bait around and see if i get any action. This covers lots of water and lots of species of fish will eat a crank bait

  2. Finding a bait and tackle shop nearby is probably the best way to start, they’ll likely have for sale whatever works and can tell you what’s in there and where they are at different times of day and different seasons. If you’re lucky they might have a map or guidebook since it seems like a pretty substantial lake.

  3. Before the invention of FFs [my first was a Lowrance flasher] we’d try to find a lake contour map. If that failed we’d assume that the terrain around the edge of the lake continued into the water. For example, if a ridge came down to the water it’s very likely that it remains a ridge below. We’d start shallow and work our way out to deeper water.

We’d also target any point of land, any island or any place where a stream empties into the lake. Another obvious location is where a shallow flat drops off into deeper water. We might start fishing the flats in the AM but as the sun rose we’d try the drop off. Good luck.

  4. YouTube how to read water. Some basics are looking for structure (dead trees in the water, docks, etc), drop offs, and inlets.

With fishing, it’s okay to ask questions on forums, but A LOT of it is self study and trial and error. You’ll get there!

Look at a topo map and find contour changes underwater. Also look on shore for any change in rock, sand, plant. That usually continue in the water. Fish like to be on the edges of things as that is where food hides out.
