How does this look for a starter tank. The balls are betta balls. I feel like I need floating plants.

  1. I would get more testing spots near the surface, and get rid of those betta beads asap. and continue to add plants in when you can.

  2. Betta balls are extremely dangerous, especially if chunks break off or if it shrinks. Bettas may try to eat it and ofc it isn’t meant to be eaten so they suffer. If you wanna play russian roulette of “Is my betta gonna eat it and end up unalive or not?”… then continue to use those. 3. Please get it off the folding table 😭

What size tank is this? With the dimensions on the table it looks at or under 3 gallons, but 5 gallons is the minimum recommended size for bettas to be comfortable and thrive. I see you have a heater and built in filter which is great, and a betta would benefit from heavy planting and nice resting spots close to the surface.

If you aren’t familiar with cycling a tank, make sure to research the nitrogen cycle and how to establish healthy water before bringing home new inhabitants. This sub has a wealth of information on the basic requirements for setting up an appropriate tank and everything from food suggestions to treating common illnesses. Research and becoming very familiar with betta care and aquarium maintenance will set you up for success and prevent a lot of headaches 🙂

Edited to add: the plants you have appear to be java fern (on the left) and a type of anubias on the back right. Both of those plants do not need to be planted in the substrate, as it’ll cause the plant to rot. You can tuck them between some rocks or use aquarium glue or fishing line to attach it to rocks or wood to keep them in place while making sure the roots and rhizome are exposed.

  4. i honestly agree with the comment that it looks too small and that the table wont hold. you want atleast 5 gallon, but i think 10 is definitely much better. my boy is in a 10 gal and he very happily uses all the space given to him. and hes not even plakat! i think the cool thing about offering more space is that the betta can establish his territory how he wants to.my betta uses the whole tank, but the left half is his obvious favourite spot. he patrols there all the time. i dunno, i understand wanting to go smaller for your first tank, but my 10 gal is my first tank and ive found it pretty easy to manage! ive heard that bigger tanks are actually easier to maintain and keep stable.
