I plan on swapping my betta over to the 20gal, using the old mature filter media and basically everything in the old tank besides the substrate, and then continue to use the old 10gal for shrimp once it’s back to stable after changing the media. I plan on keeping all the snails in there for a source of ammonia and basically cycle it all over again, is that good plan? Any tips or suggestions would be great!

Shrimp are a low bioload. Youll likely have enough nitrifying bacteria in the substrate to take care of them while your new filter gets built up. Just dont overfeed.
how we’ve done it:
– get new filter
– put new filter in running tank
– give it a few weeks for the good bacteria to colonize the new filter
– set up new tank
– fill new tank and add new (pre-seasoned) filter
– test nitrogen cycle til complete
– move over new residents
