i’ve had my betta sashimi for 4 months, this morning she was gone. i couldn’t think to much abt it cuz i had an asthma attack while my grandma was at the dentist and i had no access to my inhaler and tried to keep myself breathing for a while until i borrow one from neighbor but got so tired i just ell asleep after. and i just checked again and took apart her whole enclose and around it and she’s gone. i checked in her log, in her castle, under the sand, in the filter, everywhere. i let my cat sleep in the room last night but i dont think he’d try eating her because he’s very well trained, but then again he also isn’t scared of baths or water. if he DID eat her, could he get sick? i dont wanna lose BOTH of my favourite pets. pic of the tank that i completely took apart.

  1. the snails are completely untouched aswell. if he ate her, wouldn’t he have gone for the snails to? edit to add: all my other fish are fine. my guppies are still all accounted for, my goldfish is accounted for, my other betta is accounted for to. why would he go for JUST her and not the other tanks?

  2. Bettas are jumpers, are there any gaps or holes in the lid to your tank? I’d check the surrounding floor, behind the furniture it sits on… etc etc

  3. IF your cat ate your Betta he’s unlikely to get sick.  Fish would be pretty normal pray for a cat.  Check that your Betta fish didn’t manage to jump out of the tank and get behind the tank and between the wall.

i’m sorry to say that it’s almost certainly your cat. cats are predators by nature. even the most gentle cat may randomly choose to kill and eat a small animal, because it is how they are. while bettas are good jumpers, you’d most likely have already found the body by now, making the cat being the most likely cause of the disappearance.

I had a betta as a kid that got eaten by my cat, in the span of a few minutes. If you don’t tape down the lid it is very possible for a cat to eat it, and they definitely want to eat it.

  6. Please double check behind the tank and in the filter. If it passed in tank the snails would have taken care of it.
But like others said if he got out, catto might have had a snack. :/
Time for a full cover and another betta!
Also sorry for your loss, losing my bettas always makes me sad.

  7. Awww is your cat called mouse? My old man cat was called mouse too!! You can’t train a cat not to go near a tank. Out of boredom and a nosey betta going to the surface to see what the paw is enough for it to get grabbed quickly!

I had a black moor goldfish disappear, only explanation was that he died naturally and the snails and other fish ate him.

Honestly I’m not sure that betta was living a good life anyways. That tank looks like a prison.

Take care of your animals. Give them plants and a nice habitat. You would hate being in an ugly box with nothing to do for your entire life, so don’t do that to pets.

  10. Did you make sure to check all around the outside of the tank and also on the floor?? It is a possibility it jumped out…

  11. same thing just happened to me, except I had her for less than 48 hours. I got home from work yesterday and she seemingly vanished into thin air. I tore the whole tank apart and even smashed my huge dragon stone into pieces thinking she managed to find a hole to get stuck in. Never found a body. RIP Gwen. I didn’t have her long but I was so excited to watch her grow </3

Your aquarium looks really well enclosed. Deceased fish decompose fast. Especially in heated water. If I really had to reckon, she died, got stuck to the filter inlet and became part of the ecosystem and your snails helped the process. My snails consumed an entire dead shrimp in less than a hour.

  13. don’t name your next one Sushi please 😭 you named your fish sashimi and then your cat ate it like sashimi! no food names!!! 🥲
