I recently left my 6 year old fish to go a vacation two and a half weeks ago, and left him in the care of my neighbors for the time. When I came back, he was in this state. He’s horrifically bloated and has some of the worst pineconeing I’ve ever seen. He’s lethargic and refusing food (he’s usually very food motivated.)

I don’t even know what to do right know, I believe it’s dropsy and looks incredibly advanced. Do I euthanize???

  1. What are the water parameters like? You could try doing epsom salt soaks just to see if it helps but honestly 6 years is a pretty long life for a betta so its possible it could be time. Ive brought a fish back from pineconing myself though so I’d take a stab at it and euthanize if he only continues to decline without ANY improvement.

  2. 6 years?!? Congrats, most tend to live 2-5 from what I’ve seen. Sorry about how he is now, glad he was able to live a long and happy life in that tank.

  3. That’s one very geriatric betta… these days bettas are lucky to live 1-3 years with how inbred they are. Sadly I think it may be his time, this is rather advanced dropsy and he’s very much suffering rn. 😢

  4. I’m sorry this happened, always sucks seeing your pets sick. What’s his name? 6 years is crazy!
